The evolution of a myth adds to its wholeness filling in archetypal patterns. Not doing so can lead to stagnation by not opening space for the growth of new aspects of personality and culture. Denial and denigrating aspects of one’s personality leads to a pandemic of anxiety.

Looking at the evolution of the Circe myth through a Jungian lens as an archetypal individuation journey provides hope and a path for our culture in finding a more natural egalitarian balance of masculine and feminine energy in a direction of wholeness.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

Describe how the myth of Circe has evolved over the eons and what that might mean for an individual’s journey toward wholeness.
Utilize the myth of Circe to identify projections and complexes that might trigger anger and frustration.
Discuss shadow and how the radical denial of feminine/masculine traits and projection onto the other contribute to anxiety and depression.
Describe implications for counseling and the therapeutic process.

Kathy Avsar
Jungian Analyst, Diplomate, Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts

Dr. Avsar is a licensed professional counselor, Jungian analyst, and member of the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts. She is on the faculty of the New Orleans Jungian Seminar. She has a private practice in Birmingham where she works with individuals on their journey toward wholeness.

Kathy’s own meandering journey began on a dairy farm in Alabama, started by her grandmother when her father and uncles were still toddlers. In the sixties, the contradiction of not allowing space for the feminine on a farm that was started by the feminine, led Kathy to leave home at 17 to become a carpenter and then a firefighter. She was constantly trying to prove to herself and her family that she was as competent and capable as her brother. Fifty years of trying to prove herself led to a doctorate in behavioral neuroscience and subsequently a diploma in analytical psychology. Falling into the realm of Circe gave Kathy some missing pieces on her journey toward wholeness.
