Lecture and Discussion

via Zoom from Birmingham, Alabama

Monday, April 17, 2023

This is a free event. Contact hours are not available.

I designed this as a post-conceptual or computer art piece. I remold language & media by deconstructing/reconstructing language, shifting my use of narrative with 2-dimensional slides to a visual doorway enhanced with sound & texture. I untangle ideas & arts—or knots—of Dr. Carl Jung. Marshall McLuhan. Ivan Illich. Each offered singular paths through technological & social mazes, & models to smooth transitions of domains & interfaces. These authors saw common crises & transformation to survival, adaptation, & quality of life.

By navigating & heightening perception & judgment with art & ideas, I give direction to soul proprieties in virtual environments, as erasure of traditionally private & public spaces takes place. Proprieties include framing, context, respect, listening, expression, waiting, & skill-sharing through communication & learning. Themes include: fragmented one-sided viewpoints to integral awareness with realizable values; industrial-prominent society to convivial modes of modern subsistence; history of print & interpenetration by electric & digital environments.

My background in the liberal arts helped prepare me for my first encounter with Jung’s Red Book in 2010. Ever since, I have studied Jung’s Collected Works, paying attention to links to his Red & Black Books. Friends of Jung-South & Jung After Work have been vital spaces for me to untangle knots of Jungian ideas/arts. Jung After Work started in 2017, & I have given 4 other presentations that can be found on my website.  I have been through many paths, but I hope to soon create a sustainable lifestyle of art, writing, teaching, & gardening.

Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness of other people.
